FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. The goal is to save and invest enough money so that the returns from your investments can cover your living expenses indefinitely.
The 4% Rule
The most common rule of thumb for FIRE is the 4% rule. It states that if you can live on 4% of your total investment portfolio, you are financially independent. This implies you need to save 25 times your annual expenses.
Types of FIRE
- Lean FIRE: Retiring with a minimalist lifestyle and lower expenses.
- Fat FIRE: Retiring with a higher standard of living and a larger budget.
- Barista FIRE: Retiring from a full-time career but working a part-time job for supplemental income or benefits.
